The Silver Age of Russian poetry in music

A tribute to many of Russia’s great poets, with verses by Anna Akhmatova, Alexander Blok, Boris Pasternak, Marina Tsvetaeva, and Sergey Yesenin - and by composers Georgy Sviridov, Sergei Slonimsky, and John Tavener.

The Russian Chamber Art Society celebrates the centennial, last year, of composer Georgy Sviridov, a student of Shostakovich, and the 125th anniversary of the birth of poet Osip Mandelstam.  Please join us for a richly rewarding evening of rare and beautiful music.  Plan to stay afterwards to enjoy the elegant reception where you can meet the performers and enjoy dessert.

Baritone Kevin Wetzel will perform Sviridov's "Russia Cast Adrift," a 12-songcycle on poems by Sergey Yesenin.  Tenor Timur Bekbosunov will sing Sergei Slonimsky's 1990 settings of Mandelstam's poems and, with soprano Jasmina Halimic, three songs by Vladimir Shcherbachov after poems by Alexander Blok.  The Slonimsky and Shcherbachov works are Washington, D.C., premieres. 

Another highlight of the concert will be Sergei Prokofiev's "Five Poems of Anna Akhmatova" of 1916, sung by Halimic.

A Crown Jewel in the Cultural Landscape of DC

Designed by Washington Architect Leopold Boeckl, this prestigious location first opened its doors in 1991. Concerts are held in the 5,000-square-foot sky-lit atrium in the center of the edifice, which offers enough space to accommodate approximately 400 people.  The atrium also features cultural and art exhibitions that you'll want to browse.
