November 5 (attention – date has been changed!!!)

“BABALAIKA” group concert

There are musical instruments which have become symbols of a nation. For Russia balalaika is a symbol of peace and prosperity. That’s why musicians from the very heart of Russia Maxim Fisyn (balalaika), Vladimir Shevchuk (balalaika), Vladimir Politov (balalaika-viola), and Miroslav LLnytsky (babalaika-contrabas) created a group called “BALALAIKA” in 1996.The creative palette of the group is diverse, combining Russian folk music with original work of modern classic composers as well as popular and even country music showing the unlimited possibilities of balalaika.

Originality of interpretation, stylistic precision, emotionality and invention, humor and artistic taste — all are combined to create this unique image of the group.

At the Russian Cultural Centre musicians will present an interactive music program featuring Russian folk, modern, American country and classic pieces where the audience will have a chance to be a part of the show.

A word about balalaika
Balalaika is an ancient Russian musical instrument. Like many other popular original instruments balalaika has been highly esteemed in Russia since the old days. In ancient times there was not a holiday without it. Constantly growing popularity of this instrument stimulated the appearance of many artists playing the balalaika. In late 1880-s the famous performer, enthusiast and propagandist Andreev together with Nalimov reconstructed the balalaika giving it a new concert look and shape. Today balalaika is a leading solo and orchestra instrument.
