Submitted by Benjamin L. Cardin on March 26, 2010 - 12:44pm.After more than a year of public debate, Congress has taken an historic step by enacting the Patients Protection Affordable Health Care Act -- legislation that will benefit every American. My goal has always been to pass a health care reform bill that would reduce the escalating costs of health care and provide American families with affordable, quality health coverage without adding to our federal deficit. This bill achieves all of those goals.

Submitted by Benjamin L. Cardin on February 24, 2010 - 6:44pm.Violence against women is an epidemic of global proportions. It ranges from domestic violence to rape, from acid burnings to so-called honor killings, and it threatens one out of every three women worldwide, with rates reaching up to 70 percent in some countries.
As Chairman of the U.S. Helsinki Commission and a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, I recently joined efforts to tackle this egregious problem by co-sponsoring the International Violence Against Women Act, S.2982

Submitted by editor on November 19, 2009 - 12:23pm.The ethnic and racial composition of the United States has changed dramatically since 2000. The 2010 Census results are projected to show this trend continuing. Therefore, the U.S. Census Bureau is placing special emphasis on securing a complete and accurate count for those sectors of the United States population that have historically been undercounted. This includes Russian speakers.
For the first time in the history of the Census, Questionnaire Assistance Centers (QAC) will be opened to aid Russian speakers. Russian-language forms will be available to order over the phone through a toll-free number. Bilingual Census personnel at QAC’s also can help Russian-speakers to fill out English forms that they receive in the mail.

THE PRESIDENT: Well, thank you so much for the wonderful welcome. To President Cicerone, thank you very much for your leadership and for hosting us today. To John Holdren, thanks, John, for the outstanding work that you are doing.
I was just informed backstage that Ralph and John both are 1965 graduates of MIT -- same class. And so I'm not sure this is the perfectly prescribed scientific method, but they're sort of a control group -- (laughter) -- who ages faster: The President's Science Advisor or the President of the Academy? (Laughter.) And we'll check in in a couple of years. But it is wonderful to see them.
My Meeting With Judge Sonia Sotomayor
Submitted by Benjamin L. Cardin on June 9, 2009 - 10:00am.This is an exciting time to be a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee as we move forward in vetting President Obama’s nomination of Sonia Sotomayor to become a justice on the U.S. Supreme Court. Last week I met with Judge Sotomayor. She is a remarkable individual and I was very impressed by the breadth of her legal experience. During our meeting, we talked about a wide range of issues including the protections found in the U.S. Constitution. I found her responses to be very frank and open. I was impressed by her candor and willingness to answer my questions about how she would go about deciding constitutional issues that might come before her, should she be confirmed.

Mariinsky Ballet in Kennedy Center in Washington, DC
Submitted by editor on December 12, 2008 - 5:46pm.
Following their acclaimed production of La Bayadère at the Kennedy Center in January
2008, St. Petersburg’s Mariinsky Ballet (formerly Kirov) returns with another
master ballet from its repertory: Don Quixote.
The man from la Mancha rides headlong into the middle of a young couple’s wedding, a
spirited village celebrates with lively Spanish dancing, and a prankster Duke leads his rambunctious court.
“A dance-packed feast of humor, romance, and a touch of fantasy” (The London Times), Don Quixote is the mighty Mariinsky at its best.

Однако, я думаю, Шекспир не прав: название играет важную роль, ибо если назвать духи «Аромат тухлой рыбы», никто их покупать не будет.
